Looking at others for inspiration? That is Bidayat in a nutshell, a platform that was created for collective support of social and environmental ventures.
Cofounders Rama Al Chakaki and Mahmoud Abu Wardeh presented Bidayat at a motivating open diversity event for social entrepreneurship last week, where around 20 passionate people from different walks of life participated.
The audience learnt about the Bidayat online platform, its different features, and the benefits pertaining its users. They gave appreciated and useful recommendations regarding the website, which for the most part will be implemented soon.
They were also taken through an example of a Bidayat project -Alwan Afreen -a project born out of Syria. Afreen is situated in an area that often regarded as the “lungs of the country” - quotes Rama- for its lush meadows and breathtaking landscape. Rich with Kurdish culture, music, and language, this area has often been a muse to those living there.
Nawara Chakaki and Yaser Saghrji sought to conserve a dying craft of Afreen by bringing back the culture of weaving beautiful textiles and kilim (rug) patterns by the women of this area. In order to revive the art of weaving that has been at the heart of Afreen for centuries, Nawara and Yaser have taken the following steps:
-collected and displayed 150 kilims dating back before the 1950s
-organized exhibitions abroad to bring visibility to this artwork
-featured the project in textile journals and magazines
Through reviving this form of art, they are hoping to bring back economic value to the community and open doors for eco tourism. This way jobs will be created for the people of Afreen, as they continue farming the land and watching it flourish with an influx of tourists exploring the landscape. They also plan to publish a book on this art-form as well as establish a museum of Afreen weavings.
Nawara and Yaser are using the Bidayat website to post their project as well as list their wishes. To learn more about this project please visit www.bidayat.org/en/projects/421/alwan-afreen
Alwan Afreen is one among many other projects around the Middle East which are using the Bidayat website to list and hope that people and organizations abroad will learn about them and offer support.
