This guide offers the reader insights, lessons learnt and tips by Abdou which were established through his years of experience in social entrepreneurship.
Abdou was offered a resident research fellowship from the American University of Cairo’s John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement between November 2007 and January 2008.
The guidebook, which was the product of this fellowship, was published by the Gerhart Center in October 2010.
As in Abdou’s case, the Center occasionally hosts entrepreneurs proposing projects related to their ongoing work, and offers many more resources which promote philanthropy, civic engagement, and advance social responsibility in the Arab region.
Social entrepreneurs, philanthropic institutions, and the private sector can benefit from the research offered at the Center, and services ranging from building leadership capacity, tailored peer learning and corporate sustainability management.
The Center’s Muslim Philanthropy Digital Library and the online Arab Encyclopedia, a translation project of international documents, act as useful references and resources for social entrepreneurs.
In addition to that, the Centre sponsors a variety of Arab Universities with a focus on community based learning, social innovation, leadership skills and civic engagement.
On campus civic initiatives are also common ground, from volunteer language tutoring for workers to lectures featuring inspiring individuals with a focus on philanthropy.
